Headstone vs Flat Memorial Tablet: Which Is Right for You?

June 21, 2025·4 min read

One of the first decisions families face when planning a memorial is whether to choose a traditional standing headstone or a flat grave marker. Both have their advantages, and the right choice depends on the cemetery, personal preference, and budget.

The Standing Headstone

The standing headstone — a vertical stone placed at the head of the grave — is the most recognisable memorial format in the UK. It is visible from a distance, provides a large surface for lettering and imagery, and has a long tradition across all faiths and cultures.

  • Highly visible in a cemetery setting
  • Large surface area for inscriptions and imagery
  • Traditional and widely accepted by cemetery authorities
  • Can be combined with kerb sets and surrounds

The Flat Memorial Tablet

Flat grave markers or memorial tablets lie flush with the ground or on a plinth. They are required in some cemeteries (particularly those with lawn-style burial areas), and are also the preferred choice in natural burial sites and some church settings.

  • Required in some lawn section cemeteries
  • More modest and unobtrusive appearance
  • Can feature high-resolution photography
  • Easier maintenance — no risk of leaning or structural issues

"There is no wrong choice — only the choice that feels right for your family and your loved one."

Check Before You Decide

Always check the regulations of the specific cemetery plot before deciding on style. Some burial plots only permit one type or the other — we will check this as part of our process.
