Granite chippings are extremely durable and do not degrade. They may need occasional topping up if material is displaced, but should last many years without significant deterioration.
A kerb set or surround is generally needed to contain chippings neatly within the grave plot. Without a defined border, chippings can spread beyond the plot area. Some sites permit informal chipping within the plot without a formal kerb set.
